What is ear surgery (otoplasty)?
Otoplasty is a surgical operation to correct the shape, size or position of the ears. The most requested is the correction of prominent ears, where the ears are repositioned closer to the head for a more balanced appearance.
What can be corrected?
- Prominent or disproportionately large ears
- Asymmetry between the two ears
- Congenital deformities of the ear
- A folded ear or one with an incomplete rim
- Scars or deformities resulting from injuries
What is the right age for the operation?
The operation can be performed on children from the age of 6 years — the age when ear growth is complete — and intervention before the school stage is recommended to avoid any psychosocial impact. For adults, the operation can be performed at any age.
How is the operation performed?
It takes one to two hours under local anaesthesia for adults or general anaesthesia for young children. The surgeon makes a small, almost invisible incision behind the ear, then reshapes the cartilage and fixes it in its new position.
Recovery period
The ear is wrapped in a protective bandage for a week. Bruising and swelling disappear within 10 days. You can return to school or work after one week, avoiding sport for a month. The final result is fixed and permanent.
