Breast reduction — more than just size

Overly large breasts are not merely a cosmetic issue — they mean chronic pain in the back, neck and shoulders, difficulty exercising, skin rashes under the breast, and a psychological and social impact that affects a woman's self-confidence every day.

Breast reduction removes the excess tissue and restores proportion between the breasts and the rest of the body — patients describe the result as "a new life", not just an improvement in appearance.

Breast reduction techniques

📐

Anchor technique (Anchor / Wise Pattern)

The most common for large reductions — an anchor-shaped incision around the nipple, downwards, and horizontally under the breast. Gives the best control over the final shape.

⬆️

Vertical scar technique

An incision around the nipple and downwards only, without the horizontal incision — for medium reductions. Less scarring and faster healing, suitable for those who do not need a very large reduction.

🔄

Reduction with breast lift

In most reduction cases, a lift is automatically included — the breast is reduced and lifted at the same time for a full, elevated, non-drooping shape.

💎

Free nipple graft (for very large cases)

For very large breasts requiring a radical reduction — the nipple is transferred as a skin graft. It ensures the functional safety of the nipple in the most extreme cases of enlargement.

Symptoms that point to a surgical solution

✅ Breast reduction is suitable if you suffer from:

  • Chronic pain in the back, neck and shoulders caused by the weight of the breasts
  • Deep bra strap marks on the shoulders
  • Persistent skin rash or irritation under the breasts
  • Difficulty exercising and being physically active
  • Difficulty finding suitable clothes
  • Poor posture resulting from compensating for the weight of the breasts

⚠️ Wait if:

  • You are planning a future pregnancy — pregnancy may change the result
  • You are still growing (under 18-20 years old)
  • The breasts are still changing after recent weight loss

Recovery path

Day 1-2
Hospital and monitoring

One night in hospital. Small drainage tubes are removed before discharge. Near-complete rest is required.

Week 1-2
Rest at home

Avoid raising the arms above shoulder level. Stitches are removed after 7-10 days. The compression garment is worn continuously.

Week 2-3
Return to light work

Office work is possible after 10-14 days. No shoulder exercises or upper-body exertion.

Week 6
Return to full activity

The compression garment is still required at night. Light exercise such as walking can begin.

Month 3-6
Final result

The breast reaches its stable final size and shape. Scars gradually improve over 12-18 months.

Frequently asked questions

Will the ability to breastfeed be affected?
With pedicle techniques, the milk ducts are preserved and breastfeeding usually remains possible. However, this cannot be guaranteed absolutely — it is discussed with the doctor before the decision for those planning to have children in the future.
Will the nipple keep its natural sensation?
In most modern techniques, the nipple remains connected to the nerve tissue and retains its sensation — it may change temporarily and return within months. With the free nipple graft technique (for very large cases), sensation is permanently lost.
How does the doctor determine the right size?
It depends on: your body proportions, your height and weight, your goals (comfort only, or comfort plus aesthetics), and your sporting activity. Not "as small as possible" but "the most suitable for your body and your life".
Will back pain disappear after the operation?
For most patients: yes, noticeably and quickly — even before full recovery. Some studies indicate improvement in 85-90% of breast reduction patients. Pain that originates in the muscles rather than the weight needs additional treatment.
