Why doesn't the skin follow the weight loss?
Skin is elastic — but its elasticity is limited. When skin has been stretched for years by excess weight, it loses the collagen and elastin fibres capable of shrinking back. Very rapid weight loss does not give the skin enough time to contract gradually.
Age is a factor too — skin at thirty is more elastic than skin at fifty. But in both cases, if the amount of excess skin is large, no cream or exercise will solve it.
The most affected areas
🔴 First priority: the abdomen
Always the most affected — the skin hangs below the navel (the "apron"). It hinders movement and causes skin rashes. A tummy tuck is the highest-impact procedure in most cases.
🟠 Second: the arms
Skin hanging from the underside of the arm ("bat wings") is always visible and embarrassing. An arm lift completes the picture alongside the tummy tuck.
🟡 Third: the thighs
The hanging inner skin causes chafing and discomfort in the heat. A thigh lift completes the contouring of the lower half.
🟢 Fourth: the breasts
The breast loses volume and sags after major weight loss. A breast lift with or without augmentation is very common in these cases.
When are you ready for surgery?
Weight stable for at least 6 months
This condition is non-negotiable. If your weight is still changing, wait. Surgery on a changing weight gives an unstable result.
Adequate protein and nutrition
Your body needs enough protein and nutrients for surgical healing. After bariatric procedures, we check iron, protein and vitamin D levels before any contouring surgery.
12-18 months since the bariatric procedure (if surgical)
For those who had a sleeve or bypass, we wait until the weight stabilises and the body recovers nutritionally before contouring surgery.
The optimal order of procedures
If you need multiple procedures, the order and the combinations matter:
"The best moment in my clinic is when someone who lost 50 kg walks in and says 'my body finally reflects what I put in'. The weight-loss journey is incomplete without the final stage." — Dr. Ahmad Dawood
What if the excess skin is moderate?
Not every case needs a full lift. For those who lost a moderate amount of weight (10-20 kg):
- Liposuction alone may be enough if the skin still has reasonable elasticity
- A mini tummy tuck for limited skin below the navel
- Start with an honest assessment in the consultation — no "selling" you a bigger procedure than you need
